The Handmaid’s Tale- Summary

Chapter One Summary:

The reader learns that the narrator is called Offred, who describes the old gymnasium where she has had to be sleeping, as well as and the sense of longing and loss that is in the atmosphere around them. The room feels layered with long-gone emotions of high school dances and romance that use to take place there. She as well as other women, have to sleep on army-issue cots while Aunt Sara and Aunt Elizabeth must keep watch. Aunt Sara and Aunt Elizabeth aren’t allowed to posses guns. The guards outside, who are members of a group known as the Angels, can have guns. They aren’t allowed to enter, just like the women cannot exit, except for two walks a day.
